I'm tired of the idea that if someone doesn't agree with us they must be inferior to us somehow. We can probably learn more from the people who think differently than we do than we can from those who agree with us if we will just open our minds. We can also can more tolerance and peace if we can put ourselves in their shoes. The number of hate crimes and wars would go down if we could do this.

As we discuss these issues, let each of us do so with a good dose of humility. Rather than pointing fingers or assigning blame, let's use this occasion to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy and remind ourselves of all the ways that our hopes and dreams are bound together.

Soldier's Night Before Christmas

This poem makes me cry but I think it is important to remember the soldiers that keep us safe and their families. My parents had a Johnny Cash Christmas record with him reading this poem. When I got older, I found it on cd and bought it as soon as I good. This poem goes with the scriptures Matthew 25:2 and Mosiah 2:17.

The Christmas Guest

It happened one day at December's end

Some neighbors called on an old-time friend.

And they found his shop so meager and mean,

Made gay with a thousand boughs of green.

And old Conrad was sitting with face ashine.

When he suddenly stopped as he stitched the twine.

And he said "My friends at dawn today,

When the cock was crowing the night away,

The Lord appeared in a dream to me.

And He said, 'I'm coming your guest to be"

So I've been busy with feet astir,

Strewing my shop with branches of fir.

The table is spread and the kettle is shined,

And over the rafters the holly is twined.

And now I'll wait for my Lord to appear;

And listen closely so I will hear,

His steps as he nears my humble place.
<div style="text-align: home and left Conrad alone,

For this was the happiest day he had known.

For long since his family had passed away.

And Conrad had spent many a sad Christmas Day.

But he knew with the Lord as his Christmas guest,

This Christmas would be the dearest and best.

So he listened with only joy in his heart,

And with every sound he would rise with a start,

And looked for the Lord to be at his door.

Like the vision that he had had a few hours before.

So he ran to the window after hearing a sound,

But all he could see on the snow covered ground

Was a shabby beggar whose shoes were torn.

And all his clothes were ragged and worn.

But old Conrad was touched and he went to the door

And he said, "Your feet must be cold and sore.

I have some shoes in my shop for you.

And I have a coat to keep you warmer, too."

So with grateful heart the man went away.

But Conrad notice the time of day

And he wondered what made the dear Lord so late,

And how much longer he'd have to wait.

Then he heard another knock, and he ran to the door,

But it was only a stranger once more.

A bent old lady with a shawl of black,

And a bundle of kindling piled on her back.

But she asked only for a place to rest,

a place that was reserved, for Conrad's great guest.

But her voice seemed to plead, "Don't send me away,

Let me rest for awhile this Christmas Day."

So Conrad brewed her a steaming cup

And told her to sit at the table and sup.

After she had left, he was filled with dismay

For he saw that the hours were slipping away

The Lord had not come as He said He would

And Conrad felt sure he had misunderstood.

When out of the stillness he heard a cry.

"Please help, me and tell me - Where am I?"

So again he opened his friendly door.

And stood disappointed as twice before.

It was a child who had wandered away,

And was lost from her family on Christmas Day.

Again Conrad's heart was heavy and sad,

But he knew he could make this little girl glad.

So he called her in and he wiped her tears,

And he quieted all her childish fears.

Then he led her back to her home once more.

Then as he entered his own darkened door,

He knew that the Lord was not coming today,

For the hours of Christmas, had all passed away.

So he went to his room, and he knelt down to pray.

He said, "Lord, why did you delay?

What kept You from coming to call on me?

I wanted so much Your face to see."

Then softly, in the silence, a voice he heard.

"Lift up your head - I have kept My word.

Three times my shadow crossed your floor.

Three times I came to your lowly door.

I was the beggar with bruised cold feet;

I was the woman you gave something to eat;

I was the child on the homeless street.

Three times I knocked, three times I came in,

And each time I found the warmth of a friend.

Of all the gifts, love is the best.

Chistmas - The Old City Bar

I love Christmas, it is my favorite holiday hands down. So, over the next few days, I'm going to try to post some of my favorite Christmas songs and poems.

I discovered "The Old City Bar" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra a couple of years ago and it embodies some of the things Christmas means to me and reminds me to look for those less fortunate than myself. One of my favorite lines is: "If you want to arrange it, This world you can change it, If we could somehow make this Christmas thing last."

You can find this song on their album "Christmas & Other Stories."

Here are the lyrics:

In an old city bar
That is never too far
From the places that gather
The dreams that have been

In the safety of night
With its old neon light
It beckons to strangers
And they always come in

And the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
The music was low
And the night
Christmas Eve

And here was the danger
That even with strangers
Inside of this night
It's easier to believe

Then the door opened wide
And a child came inside
That no one in the bar
Had seen there before

And he asked did we know
That outside in the snow
That someone was lost
Standing outside our door

Then the bartender gazed
Through the smoke and the haze
Through the window and ice
To a corner streetlight

Where standing alone
By a broken pay phone
Was a girl the child said
Could no longer get home

And the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
The bartender turned
And said, not that I care
But how would you know this?
The child said I've noticed
If one could be home
They'd be all ready there

Then the bartender came out from behind the bar
And in all of his life he was never that far
And he did something else that he thought no one saw
When he took all the cash from the register draw

Then he followed the child to the girl cross the street
And we watched from the bar as they started to speak
Then he called for a cab and he said J.F.K.
Put the girl in the cab and the cab drove away
And we saw in his hand
That the cash was all gone
From the light that she had wished upon

If you want to arrange it
This world you can change it
If we could somehow make this
Christmas thing last

By helping a neighbor
Or even a stranger
And to know who needs help
You need only just ask

Then he looked for the child
But the child wasn't there
Just the wind and the snow
Waltzing dreams through the air

So he walked back inside
Somehow different I think
For the rest of the night
No one paid for a drink

And the cynics will say
That some neighborhood kid
Wandered in on some bums
In the world where they hid

But they weren't there
So they couldn't see
By an old neon star
On that night, Christmas Eve

When the snow it was falling
The neon was calling
And in case you should wonder
In case you should care

Why we're on our own
Never went home
On that night of all nights
We were already there

You can hear it here:
<iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/eA0vPtboZIw" Helit
You scored 88 intelligence, 66 morality, and 64 physical strengenth!

As Death's granddaughter (a long story, which you greatly dislike), you inherited his ultimate practicality and lack of fear. In fact, boogeymen and other childhood boggles fear YOU. Often assisted by the Death of Rats and his raven, you manage to fix the Universe inbetween working as a governness and educating the masses. and these are the rules:

1. Pick the number of books you want to read. It can be a mixture of the top 101, and/or the whole list. For example, you might want to aim to read 5 from the top 101 and 5 from the rest of the list.

2. Create a list of the books you want to tackle. You can create a list now, or add them as you go. Completely up to you.

3. The challenge runs from 10/10/09 to 10/10/10.

4. Please post the direct link to your 101 Fantasy Reading Challenge post. (so that other participants can visit and see what you are reading)

I'm going to try to read at least 10 books from the list. It started 10/1/09 and ends 10/1/10. Given the amount of fantasy I read I don't expect this to be the easiest of the challenges.

The guidelines for this one are to read either 3.14 or 8 books in the sci fi genre and their is a list at the site. I don't read a lot of straight SciFi anymore, most of what I read is in the realm of fantasy so I'm going for 3.14. It started 8/28/09 and ends 8/9/10.

The last one doesn't have any images to post that I can see but it's the A-Z challenge and starts Jan 1. I'm doing the author challenge so I need to read a book by an author that starts with each letter of the alphabet in order. When i get to X I may end up just going for an x in the author's name. We'll see how it goes.

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #4b5d67; I don't really have an excuse except that I haven't done much. I have updated my SCA blog more recently but that's about it.

I have been wanting to go back to school for my Master's degree for a while but I have been struggling with what, exactly, to study. Ultimately, I want to be a college professor but I need to figure out what to do until then. I want to do something that has more impact on the world for good. I don't feel like I'm doing that in my current job. So, here are the programs I'm considering.

Masters in Public Administration at PSU with a specialization in Global Leadership. It's a fairly flexible degree and I could continue to work in business if I wanted but I could also work for an NPO and help people more than I am now.

Industrial/Organizational Psychology at PSU. This would allow me to use the MBTI and study personality theory a lot more. Since that is something I've very interested in it's a very tempting idea. I would also be helping people more.

If I could afford to quit my job and go to school I would be tempted to do the MS in Tourism Industry Management with a focus on Sustainability at UH, but I can't afford that unless I get a lot more loans and I'm not sure that's something I want to do.

So, now I just need to figure out what to do and get up the courage to do it.

Happy Independance Day

Today is the day to celebrate the freedom we have in this country. I think a lot of us take that freedom for granted.

I don't think I can ever tak it for granted after my college experience. Two brothers in my ward were from Africa. Their father and brothers were killed because they belonged to the wrong political party and they had no idea where their mother and sisters were. That doesn't happen here.

In Iran in the last two weeks people have died because they believed the election was fixed. Others were taken captive who had the misfortune to be connected to exiles of the country. That doesn't happen here.

I'm proud to be an American, even if I don't always agree with the leaders of the country. Being an American gives me the right to disagree with them and be as vocal as I like about it. I can even call for a recall of those leaders if I feel strongly about it.

America has it's problems, but as long as we take care of each other and follow the constitution, we can overcome those problems.

This Weekend

Marianne and I went to Tacoma this weekend. We went mostly to see the Museum of Glass. I was a little disappointed. It was actually fairly small, it felt like a gallery show more than a museum. I'm glad I went though. We did go to the bridge again but I didn't take any pictures this time. (The pictures I took last year can be seen here.

We also went to the Point Defiance park while we were there. All of the pictures I took can be seen here. We're not perfect, but we have a lot of really good things.

Some of you know I seriously considered joining the military after college and sometimes still wonder if I made the right decision by not joining. Most of you know that my brother has served in the Navy for about 11 years now and my sister served in the Army for a short time. My brother has been to Afghanistan and Iraq. Two of my cousins also served in Iraq, one in the Marines and one in the Army. An uncle served in Vietnam and another served during Vietnam but was never deployed. My grandfather served in WWII in the Navy. So, as you can see, we're a patriotic family.

Not everybody can serve in the military but we can all help our country. We can serve in so many ways here at home. We can send letters and care packages to deployed soldiers. Help children and homeless. Lobby our representatives for what we think this country needs to be better.

I don't always fit in here but I'm damn proud to be an American and if it came down to it, I'd die to protect it.

I think Keni Thomas says it best in his song "Hero." She listed 5 things she feels are overrated and 5 that she feels are underrated. Note - this is a highly personal list but I thought it was interesting.

Overrated
1. Political Parties - They generally serve as a divisive element in government. Rather than see the thing that need to be done and doing them, the individual parties argue about who has the best idea. So, nothing gets done.

2. Twitter - I really don't need to 40 character updates 50 million times a day about what you are doing.

3. Designer Jeans - I just can see the sense in paying over $100 for a pair of jeans. If I really want to I can get the same look with an iron, some thread and a bedazzler.

4. Luxury SUV's - SUV's are meant to haul stuff and go places you can't go in a regular car. They are not meant to be a status symbol.

5 Internet of the Phone - I really don't need to be constantly available. Has our addiction to the internet gotten so bad that we have to see it on a 3 inch screen?

Underrated
1. Books - I LOVE BOOKS. This shouldn't be a surprise to many people but it's true. I love the feel and smell of books. I love being able to curl up and loose myself for a while in a different place. I'm not sure I could get that in a digital reader.

2. Sunshine - The sun gets vilified occasionally for causing skin cancer but nothing makes me feel better than sitting in the sun with my 30 spf and reading.

3. Natural Fibers - 'nuff said

4. Peace and quiet - I think this might be why I don't ever want email on my phone. I get so busy sometimes that it's nice to just sit and enjoy the silence.

5. Helping Others - 'nuff said.

My New Hero

This woman is my new hero. They tend to keep more toward greens, blacks, and natural colors for their wardrobe and their make-up, if they wear it to begin with. They tend to be grounded and not caught up in the latest trends. They are more interested in doing what feels right for them and being in touch with what is around them.

For inner beauty earth elements look for stability and commitment. They look after others and their family. They are realistic and tactile, meaning they aren't afraid to touch and be touched. But they can also be quite stubborn and unmoving when their mind is made up.

Zodiac signs for earth are Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn.

You also scored:

25% Water: Water is the etheral beauty. They like things that drape and shimmer. The love vintage and heirlooms; things with emotional ties and history. 0% Water may mean that you don't trust or use your intuition. Equal Water and Air would indicate a person that is a hard worker with a need for security and an attachment to possessions.

25% Air: Air is the fearless beauty. They are offbeat and funny. The mix old fashions with new and love to make new trends. They aren't afraid to be new or crazy. 0% Air could indicate that you have trouble looking at things objectively. Persons with equal Earth and Air are usually those who think and use good common sense.

25% Fire: Fire is the alluring beauty. They like to wear bright colors and show some skin. They are sexually minded and spicy. They use a lot of charm to get what they want. 0% Fire can often be seen in someone that pushes and tries to force self-expression. An equal Fire and Earth person is someone who has the ability to be powerfully creative. Fire provides the motivation and Earth provides the tangible results.

Take The Elemental Beauty Test at HelloQuizzy

100 List Recap

It's been a year since I started this blog and it seems like a good time to look at my 100 list and what I've accomplished in the last year. So here goes.

14. Learn to do Majorca - I took a class on this at an SCA event. I'm not very good at it and I'm not sure I enjoy it enough to get better.

22. Get to Artisan level in the E&E guild - I may eliminate this one.

36. Cook dinner from scratch at least once a week - This is one of my new years resolutions as well, it's going moderately well.

40. Take lunch to work at least once a week - as I cook more this is happening more often.

67. Become an SCA herald - hold at least 1 office - I am the Dragon's Mist pursuivant currently and will be applying for a kingdom deputy position when it opens later this year.

68. Make/own a complete Tudor outfit - working on this now.

93. Get a passport - I got a passport in January.

Wow, I'm doing better than I thought, still have room to go though.

Spice Meme

Your result for The Which Spice Are You Test...

Fennel

You are Fennel!
You're a cool cat. It's The Swallows Nest in the Ukraine. At least half of it's appeal comes from it's location. I want to read all the standard works this year. I decided to start in 2nd Nephi instead of starting over and I need to read about 6.5 pages a day to finish all four in the year. I did great yesterday but then worked 18 hours so I haven't read yet today. I'm not done with the project so I'm not sure when it I'll be able to read today.

As far as my other goals, I'm not doing great. I'm having a hard time leaving the computer off in the afternoon. I may start with a different day.

I made tortellini soup the first week. I haven't made anything yet this week though. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before? I went to both crown events and started 2 blogs.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year? I don't think I made any resolutions last year. It's not something I do much, it feels too pressured. I did however create a 100 list.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Yes, I have a new niece.

4. Did anyone close to you die? Yes

5. What countries did you visit? I didn't travel out of the Pacific NW much this year. I went to a conference in Georgia but that's it.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? More faith

7. What dates from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? I don't know if any date will stick. Events will, a friend dying, a new niece being born healthy despite being several weeks early, the trip to Washington with my sisters, some of the great SCA events I went to, getting to see Riverdance.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? Becoming a better herald

9. What was your biggest failure? Lack of faith

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Nope, some minor allergy issues but I'm mostly healthy otherwise.

11. What was the best thing you bought? My new bed, it's so nice to lay down without my feet hanging off the end of the bed.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration? Our service men and women, they go out everyday knowing they may die or be seriously heart for their beliefs.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed? The media during the presidential election.

14. Where did most of your money go? Bills

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? My niece is the only thing I can think of.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008? I can't think of any.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:a) happier or sadder? about the same b) thinner or fatter? about the same but hopefully a little healthier c) richer or poorer? about the same

18. What do you wish you’d done more of? read

19. What do you wish you’d done less of? Cleaning

20. How did you spend Christmas? At my parents' house with my sister, parents, aunt, and grandmother

21. Did you fall in love in 2008? No

22. What was your favorite TV program? I watch far too much tv. Favorite shows include, Grays Anatomy and NCIS. I also enjoy hockey games, especially the Canucks and Winterhawks.

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? I think hate is a very strong word. There are people that annoy me but I don't hate anyone.

24. What was the best book you read? I read a lot so I can't name any one book as the best

25. What was your greatest musical discovery? I can't think of any.

26. What did you want and get? A new bed

27. What did you want and not get? A new couch

28. What was your favorite film of this year? I'm not really sure I watched any of last year's films.

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I turned 32. My parents and sister came over and we barbecued. My friends also had a little party for me at Sept. Crown

30. What one thing would have made your year more satisfying? More faith in God's timing

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? I don't think it changed, I'm pretty simple.

32. What kept you sane? Hanging out with friends and, conversely, those days I had to myself.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? I don't really "fancy" any public figure.

34. What political issue stirred you the most? I've gotten really cynical about politics so I don't think anything surprised me this year.

35. Who did you miss? My family and friends that live far away.

36. Who was the best new person you met? This question doesn't make sense to me.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008. Don't let fear of failure keep you from doing what you want to. (Still working on it.)

38. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. It doesn't have to be anything fancy, just new. I'm hoping this will get me out of the habit of relying on boxed food. I'm going to start tonight with Tortellini Soup.

Second, I've decided I waste too much time on the computer so I will turn it off by noon on Sunday and not turn it back on until Monday. I may decide to leave it off all day by the end of the year but I want to start slow.

Bored

I am officially bored. There was 14 inches of snow this morning. (Far more than Portland usually gets in a year.) I didn't want to deal with chains (required) and the bus wasn't coming to my stop so I decided to work from home. I hate typing on my laptop but did get some stuff done. I'm going stir crazy though. If I decide to work from home tomorrow I'm going to have to at least walk to the store, just to get out.

I'm trying to watch a hockey game but I can't focus on it either. It's even the Canuks!!

Anyway, while I was bored I found this. For those of you unfamiliar with this, it is the Meyers-Brigg Type Instrument and it is a method to determine personality type. It's the only profiler that most people, including me, believe to be accurate.

It defines 16 personality types made up of 4 preferences. These are:

Extroverted/Introverted
Sensing/iNtuitive
Thinking/Feeling
Judging/Perceiving

Anyway, the blog had a link to this site that analyzes your blog and tells you what type it is. I sent it to both of my blogs and got ISTP for this one and ESTP for the SCA blog. I found this to be kind of funny because everytime I've taken the sorter, whether it's the official one or a smaller one, I'm INFP. The only preference that is even close is the E/I all the rest are fairly extreme.

After I looked at the results I went wandering around the web looking for MBTI stuff. I found this site that had an interesting sentence that I think explains why I'm so middle ground on most issues:

They live life in an intently personal fashion, acting on the belief that each
person is unique and that social norms are to be respected only if they do not
hinder personal development or expression.

I sometimes worry that I don't have strong opnions about important issues. I've realized though, that I do have strong opinions as they pertain to me, just not as they pertain to others. I think that's ok. I think everyone has a right to live life as they see fit and nobody has a right to take that away.

Anyway, that's enough rambling for now. Grace Marie was born at 3:11 this morning. She was born at 35 weeks but was 19 inches and a little over 5 lbs. (I can't remember her exact weight right now.) They were worried about her lungs because she is early, but she came out screaming so everything seems to be fine. Katie is doing well also. Tom Perry:

"In the Book of Mormon story of the tree of life, it was the people whose 'manner of dress was exceedingly fine' who mocked those who partook of the fruit of the tree. It is sobering to realize that the fashion-conscious mockers in the great and spacious building were responsible for embarrassing many, and those who were ashamed 'fell away into forbidden paths and were lost'"

This really struck a chord with me. At my current job everyone dresses very nice. Most people shop at Nordstrom, Macy's, and Banana Republic which are the closest stores to us. I've started to feel like the way I dress is inferior even though no one has said anything about it. I resist buying clothes at places like JC Penny because I'm sure people will know and look down on me for it.

Nobody is going to know where I shop and if they care, so what? I have more important things to do with my money, like buy a house, travel, and maybe help someone.

The other thing that bothers me is that as I window shop on my lunch hour I start to think $50 pants are a good deal. They aren't. I can get pants and jeans for less than that and shouldn't waste my money on things that aren't important.

Meme - I'm a Doris

I know I haven't posted anything substantial in a while and I'll try to do better. The issues are issues and everyone has a right to their opinion and to vote for the person who shares as many of those opinions as possible.

No, my frustration is the media's focus on very irrelevant things in this election. Specifically Obama's race, Mccain's age, Romney's religion, and Hilary and Palin's gender and fashion choices.

Now, I understand the arguments behind most of these issues. I just don't agree.

Their afraid McCain will die, which is pretty stupid really considering that we're all going to die and age doesn't necessarily have much to do with it. Some people die as babies and some are still raring to go at 100. Irrelevant.

Romney's religion: Irrelevant. Yes, we are shaped by our beliefs but I don't think he was going to make everyone convert or even agree with his religion. We should have focused on his history as a government and business leader. The man has a very good financial mind and we could definitely use that right now. But no, we focused on his religion instead.

Obama's race: I really don't get this one. I don't think he's the every man he's trying to portray himself as but I don't think his race has anything to do with it. I think the question "Is America ready for a black president?" is rather insulting to the American people.

Hilary and Palin's gender. "Is America ready for a woman president/vice-president?" Seriously? Many other developed, powerful nations either have or have had women leaders. Some very male dominated societies have had women leaders. Granted, they don't tend to live very long due to assassination but still. Why are we asking this question? Women have strengths and weaknesses just like men and we should be basing our decision on the issues not gender.

Now for the biggest frustration- Hilary & Palin's fashion choices. When Hilary was still in the race every article mentioned what color her pants suit was. Now, it's Palin's turn. Nobody does this with the men. I don't open to the political articles and see that Obama or McCain wore a blue suit today. What's the point? Fashion choices have absolutely no bearing on how someone will do as a leader. It doesn't even make sense.

Ok, so I'm done ranting. For the record, I don't know who I'm voting for yet. I have a pretty good idea, but I'm not 100% sure. There are things about each that I don't like.

Recipe Request

I am trying to eat a bit healthier than I do now. Since I am generally only cooking for myself I tend to rely on a lot of packaged meals and canned soups. Then, for lunch I go to one of the various fast food places around work. This is getting expensive and isn't very good for me. So, I am asking for recipes that are fairly easy, realatively healthy and freeze well. If you have any please let me know or if you know a good source online that would be great as well.

Me Like Hockey

The Winterhawks season opener is tomorrow night. I want to go to Portland State for an MBA with specializations in International Business and Sustainability. Hopefully, I will be able to find a position helping companies and countries develop sustainable tourism enterprises. Tourism is one of the few completely renewable resources if it's done right.

This will help me on a couple fronts.
1. I don't feel like I am doing enough to help make the world a better place. I'm so sick of people talking about saving the rain forest or the coral reefs or whatever without considering the people who relay on farming or fishing or whatever. It's important to save our natural resources but we can't do it without finding another way for people to feed their families. I think that tourism can really marry these two goals.

2. I went into Hospitality in college because I wanted to travel and I haven't done much of that.

So, I'm studying for the GMAT now and hope to go to PSU fall of 2009.

The color of my aura...

Your Aura is Violet

Idealistic and thoughtful, you have the mind and ideas to change the world.
And you have the charisma of a great leader, even if you don't always use it!

The purpose of your life: saying truths that other people dare not say

Famous purples include: Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B.
